Building Strong Father-Daughter Relationships

On this week’s episode of the podcast, we’re talking about how to build a strong father-daughter relationship. I brought in my resident expert, Jesse, to give us input. 🙂

(I didn’t mention this on the podcast, but we also asked the girls to both give input on what they feel helps to build a strong relationship and that was some of the basis of what Jesse shared.)

It has been so beautiful to watch Jesse lean in and love his daughters so well as they’ve gotten older. I know there can be a tendency for dads to pull back as girls get older and it can feel somewhat awkward as they are no longer little girls and are blossoming into young women.

In this podcast, I ask Jesse to talk about how he has nurtured relationships with the girls, fostered strong communication and openness, and what he’s done to continue to build into them as they’ve gotten older.

He drops a lot of truth nuggets including the importance of making them feel valued, challenging them but not expecting perfection, and how to get them to want to talk with you.

Why Jesse and Kathrynne Went to South Africa

As a mom, there’s not much that warms your heart more than seeing your child find such fulfillment in loving on others.

We usually go to South Africa every year to spend time with our friends there and to see the progress and work being done by Take Action Ministry — the ministry that is near and dear to our hearts and the one we are very involved with there. (If you’re interested in reading about previous trips, you can read more and see lots of pictures here.)

I couldn’t go this year because of my pregnancy, but I got to send Jesse and Kathrynne instead and they had the absolute BEST time!
I just couldn’t stop smiling as Jesse sent me pictures when they were there. To see my 14-year-old so happy and at home in the country that has stolen my heart made me beyond thrilled and proud as a parent.

There’s a lot of things we’ve gotten wrong and are getting wrong as parents, but we will never regret the priority we’ve placed on travel and experiencing other countries and cultures. It has so profoundly impacted all of us for so much good.

In this week’s episode of the podcast, I sat down with Jesse and Kathrynne and asked them to share about their trip. I loved getting to hear their perspective, what they experienced, and what they have learned from our time spent in South Africa.

Okay, I know I’ve said this before about other episodes, but I truly think today’s episode was one of my very favorite podcast recordings to date!

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Aundi Kolber is a therapist and I felt like I got a therapy session just by spending an hour with her?! 🙂 Listen in to the episode and you’ll see what I mean.

Aundi has a gift of sharing so eloquently and yet also in such a heartfelt manner. She just exudes such peace and calmness, but also such profound wisdom and understanding of how we are wired.

In this episode, we not only talk about what’s saving our lives (I had to laugh that she talked about something related to brain science and I talk about leggings!) and the books we’re reading, but then we dive into some deep heart topics. She shares what it means to Try Softer (the title of her new book), the difference between Big T trauma and little t trauma and how we might be experiencing the aftershocks of little t trauma without even realizing it and this might be at the root of our stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.

Aundi explains thoroughly how the body processes pain — whether physical or emotional. And she provides very concrete suggestions and ideas for how we can start to take steps toward more healing and wholeness.

Whether you feel stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed or whether you know someone who does, this conversation is highly important and one that you do not want to miss. I have thought of it over and over again since we recorded last week and will be taking so many nuggets of truth from it to apply to my everyday life.

4 Strategies to Survive Stretching Seasons

Are you in a season of life that feels stretching, exhausting, or overwhelming? If so, today’s episode just might really encourage you!

I share 4 strategies for surviving stretching seasons that I’m currently implementing right now in the middle of morning sickness and a really, really full work schedule (gratefully, I’m finished with 3 of the biggest work weeks of my year and things are slowing down now!)

By the way, I intentionally use the word stretching not stressful… and I explain why on the podcast. This change in wording really has helped me to have a different perspective! And I talk about this as the first strategy on the podcast today.

I get really practical in this episode, including talking about why I decided to take medication for my nausea and what is working for me.

My 4-Week Offline Sundays Experiment

Can you believe that I was working every single day of the week most weeks so far in 2019? Yes, it’s true, even though I’m a little embarrassed to admit it. In this week’s podcast episode, I share why I thought this was necessary and why I decided to try taking Sundays off.

When Jesse and I first got married, we always took Sunday offline. It was a day for us to just enjoy going to church, resting, and being together as a family.

In recent years, I’ve fallen out of that practice (I’m not even exactly sure why, but I did). In addition to going to church and volunteering at church, Sunday became a day for me to also play catchup on a lot of blogging work and emails.

This meant that I was usually working at least some hours every single day of the week. Which I don’t recommend and am a little embarrassed to admit… because it meant I rarely had a stretch of offline time for more than a few hours at a time.

My 4-Week Commitment

I could make a lot of excuses and seemingly valid reasons as to why I “needed” to work on Sunday, but I realized that working 7 days a week wasn’t good for my soul or body or family, so I decided to try something different and make a 4-week commitment to unplug and go offline on Sundays.

In today’s podcast episode, I share really candidly the surprising results of my experiment and how much it has changed my life. (Oh and Jesse also shares about his current morning routine and a type of chair we love. I talk about a book I finished recently and the one food I’ve been loving in my first trimester.)

4 Rhythms You Need In Your Life

“We don’t need to hustle to prove something God already says is true.”

I can’t stop thinking about this quote, ever since I read it in Rebekah Lyon’s book, Rhythms of Renewal.

If we’re gut honest, how often are we working so hard in an effort to try to impress someone else, earn someone’s approval, or prove something to ourselves or others?

Jesus came so we can stop striving and instead rest in the beautiful truth that we are enough in Him. We don’t have to do more, be more, try harder, do better, and hustle like crazy to win His favor. In Christ, we are pre-approved. There’s rest and freedom at the foot of the Cross!

I was so honored to get to sit down and record a podcast episode with Rebekah Lyons recently on what it looks like to live from a place of renewal and rest instead of from a place of stress. We talked about the 4 rhythms everyone needs to have in their life, how easy it can be to incorporate them, and how much of a difference they can make.

She also shared about their recent adoption and how this “holy interruption” has beautiful impacted their life in ways she couldn’t dream or imagine.
