Becoming a WAHM: Budgeting – Part 3

Once you have determined you’re willing to put in a tremendous amount of effort in order successfully work from home and you’ve streamlined your life and developed organization, you’re not quite ready to jump headfirst into beginning your business. There’s one more thing which you need to have in place in order to have a strong foundation for a successfully working from home.

What is that one thing? It is that you need to be operating on a workable written budget. I’m not speaking of a budget for your business here, I’m talking about you personally living on a budget.

Why is this so important? Well for one, I’ve seen a lot of families who think they have an income problem when really they have a disorganization and self-discipline problem. You see, if you think you can’t make ends meet and you need to dramatically increase your income and yet you don’t even have a plan in place for your money, how do you know you can’t make ends meet? Perhaps the ends would meet just fine if you’d buckle down and start giving every dollar a name.

There will never be enough money for those who lack self-discipline. Increasing your income won’t fix the problem if the problem is that you aren’t willing to work hard and wait until you can afford something.

As I wrote earlier:

Why am I such a big proponent of living on a budget? It is because I know
that were it not for our budget and the grace of God, we would very
likely be up to our eyeballs in debt right now, barely making ends
meet–just like pretty much all the rest of our law school friends are.
We wouldn’t be living comfortably well below our means, we wouldn’t
have an emergency fund of six months’ expenses in the bank, and we certainly wouldn’t be on a savings plan to pay 100% down for a home in 3-5 years.

we’re frugal (I came into the marriage frugal, my husband has learned
to be out of necessity!), but we would be miles behind where we are now
without a written budget. I know this because we’ve done the math and
we know without a doubt that having a written budget, giving every
dollar a name, and putting it on paper, on purpose (to quote a few Dave Ramsey lines) has saved us literally thousands of dollars over the last five years.

Setting up a cash-flow plan is imperative before you start a business because it enables you to make your money work for you. Instead of you being a slave to a mountain of ever-increasing bills, you are at the helm of the ship with a written plan in place for every dollar you make. Your money will go farther, your stress levels will dramatically decrease, and you’ll be in great shape to become a WAHM!

Note: If budgeting is new to you, start with this post. Then go get yourself a copy of The Total Money Makeover. Dave walks you step-by-step through a plan to revolutionize your life and experience financial peace. In addition to The Total Money Makeover, I highly recommend this DVD on Cash-Flow Planning (this DVD was one of my first exposures to Dave Ramsey and it completely won me over! If you are a visual learner, this will especially be helpful.)

Just for fun: How many of you live on a budget? What has been the single greatest benefit your family has experienced by living on a budget?

Coming Friday: Dress Like a Cow Day and Get Free Food at Chick-Fil-A!

Chick-Fil-A is celebrating cow appreciation day on Friday, July 11, 2008. If you dress head-to-toe like a cow you’ll receive a free combo meal. If you wear a cow accessory you’ll receive a free entree item. More details here.

Now for the fun part! Because I love Chick-Fil-A and because I like to keep things exciting, we’re celebrating "Dress Like a Cow Day" here on Friday. If you have a Chick-Fil-A nearby and you aren’t ashamed of doing something a little goofy in order to get free food, here are the details:

::Dress up in some way, shape, or form like a cow. There are lots of ideas here to get your creative juices flowing. The only stipulation is that you use materials you already have on hand to make your cow costume; do not go out and buy something to make your costume otherwise it ruins the whole concept of the food being free! Get your whole family in on the act, if possible.

::Take pictures of your whole clan dressed up and ready to head out the door to Chick-Fil-A. (Or get extra points for taking the pictures at Chick-Fil-A!) I’ll have a Mr. Linky up so you can post the link to your cow-adorned pictures for all of us to see.

::Enjoy your free food, make an unforgettable memory with your children and/or friends, and have a blast while other people look at you like you’ve lost your mind. Oh the things we frugal folks will do when there is free food involved!

I promise you, this is going to be udderly hilarious; I can hardly wait to see what crazy costumes you all come up with! And yes, I’m going to do it too. My friend Jessica roped me into this and there’s no backing out now… but I’m pretty sure I’m too chicken to do the full head-to-toe thing. 🙂

Restaurant freebies: Taco Bell and Little Caesers

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, July 8, 2008) through the following Tuesday (July 15, 2008), you can get a free sample of Taco Bell’s Fruitista Freeze at all participating Taco Bell locations.
I’m not sure on the size of the sample, so if you try this, let us know! (Thanks, Denise!)

Also, with this coupon you can get a free order of Crazy Bread from Little Caesers when you buy any $5 Hot and Ready Pizza. $5 for pizza and breadsticks? Sounds like quite the deal to me! (Note: The coupon says "valid at participating locations" so I’m not for sure that it will work at all locations. But it’s worth a try!) (Thanks, Lavonne!)

Walgreens: Deals for the week of July 6-July 12, 2008

The deals looked really slim at Walgreens this week to me. Here’s are two I saw:

Buy 1 Bayer Heart Advantage Aspirin at $4.99, Get $2 Register Rewards
Use $2.50/1 coupon from 05/18 SmartSource insert
$0.49 each after coupon and Register Reward

Pledge – on sale for $3
Buy 2 and use B1G1 coupon
Send in for $2 EasySaver rebate (#21)
$0.50 each after coupon and rebate

Be sure to check out the details and deals you can get with this children’s coloring/coupon booklet.

Also, the diaper deal mentioned last week is good all month. However, since diapers are no longer on sale for $5.99 like last week, it isn’t quite as sweet. For those who missed it, though, it’s still a great deal:

Buy 3 packages of Walgreens diapers at $7.99 each
Use $2/1 coupon from the Prescription Savings booklet (should take $2 off each pack)
Use $5/2 coupon from EasySaver July booklet (should take $2.50 off each pack)
Get $5 Register Reward (this is advertised in the July EasySaver booklet so if for some reason it doesn’t print, be sure to politely ask them to re-ring your order or give you the $5 on a gift card)
$1.82 per pack of diapers after coupons and Register Rewards

See the ad scans for this week here, courtesy of Hot Coupon World.

Buy 1 Nature Made Rx Essentials at $9.99, Get $9.99 rebate
Use $1/1 coupon from 04/20 or 06/01 insert*

Free plus overage after coupon and rebate!

*From Bethany:

you’re a Nature Made member and have points banked, request your own $5
or $7 coupon from their website.

Reader Tips and Deal Alerts: Rite Aid, Olive Juice Kids, Wachovia, Amazon, and Back-To-School Sales

Rite Aid: Free $30 Gift Card for Prescription Transfer – From Jen:
Rite Aid is offering a $30 gift card when you transfer a RX to their stores. You can print multiple coupons here and it’s good until 7/31.

Wachovia: Way 2 Save Program – From Tasha:
Wachovia also has a new program that we LOVE. It is called the “Way 2 Save” program. It just adds a dollar to every purchase. Instead of just rounding up like Bank of America you just add a full $1 that is directly transferred to this savings program. You can also transfer up to $100 yourself each month. Also, like Bank of America, they will PAY you to save. The first year is 5% APY and the second and third year is an added 2% APY. Here is the link to check it out.

Amazon: Kashi Deal – From Kristy:
Amazon is offering $20 off of a $49 purchase of Kashi products this month. Most of their cereal and bars are too high for me, but their Whole Grain Pilaf works out to a pretty decent deal. It is $16.54 for six boxes. If you buy 3 deals, that would be $49.62 minus $20 which brings you too $29.62 or $1.65 a box (there are 9 meal servings or 15 or so side servings per box), delivered because you get free shipping.

Kroger: Free Plus Overage After Rebate Pert Plus Botanicals – From Jeannine:
I just went to Kroger and purchased the Pert Plus Botanicals shampoo.  It was $3.35 and I had a $3 off coupon from this past Sunday’s paper (6/29/08).  On the outside of the bottle there was a mail-in rebate offer for the price of the bottle (up to $3.99).  I just made a profit of $3 and got a free bottle of shampoo!!

Back-To-School Sales Starting Soon! – From Sharon:
Just a reminder to your readers with school age children or who are teachers to be on the lookout — the big school supply sales will start this weekend. I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and they were stocking up really big. Most years in my area spiral notebooks go on an unadvertised sale at Wal-Mart for $0.15/each the weekend after the Fourth. But you have to be there to catch it because they don’t usually put that sale in the flyers. Last year I got crayons and glue stick packs for $0.10 each (I used these in goody bags for my son’s birthday party as well as for Christmas goody bags for my Sunday School children. Another good one to watch for is the pocket folders with clips for $0.05 at Staples and Office Depot a little later in the month.

CVS: More deals and an update

**Check your email inboxes! CVS sent out a bunch of $4/$20 coupons today–good for tomorrow only!**

It appears like the $2.99 facial towelettes which were giving $2.99 ECBs back are now only giving $1 back. The bad news is that you won’t get any overage on them. The good news is that they are still free:

Buy 1 15-count CVS brand cleansing towelettes at $2.99, Get $2.99 ECBs (Limit 5)

Buy 1 15-count towelette at $2.99
Use $2/1 CVS skincare product coupon
Spend $0.99 out of pocket
Get $1 ECBs back

Free after coupon and ECBs

Another weekly deal:

CVS brand Q-tips are on sale for $2 this week. If your store considers this a skincare product, you can use the $2/1 coupon and get these free! (Thanks, Motherbear!)

And another free (or almost free) monthly deal:

Buy 2 Trident Xtra Care Gum (Priced at $1.25 to $1.49), Get $1 ECBs

Buy 2 Tridents
Use 2 $0.75/1 coupons from the August All You magazine (There’s also reports of tear pad B1G1 coupons, too!)
Spend $1 to $1.50 out of pocket
Get $1 ECB back!
(Thanks, Heather!)

Walgreens: Free plus overage Woolite and Spray n’ Wash

From Bethany:

and Spray ‘n’ Wash are on sale for 2/$5 at Walgreens this week. There
is also a July EasySaver rebate (#30) for $2 on each, making them .50.
To sweeten the deal further, use either this or this printable $1 Spray
‘n’ Wash coupon. You’ll make a profit of .50 a bottle.

Note: The
end price I’ve listed is purposely lower than the one in the ad flier.
For some reason Walgreens combined two different rebate offers in one
ad photo, confusing the final price. If you do the math on the deal, it
still comes out correct.

Regional Store Deals: Food Lion, Kroger, Winn-Dixie, Hy-Vee

Food Lion: $10/$50 Coupon – From Mommy Making Money:

Yesterday’s Washingon Post (7/2) has a coupon for $10 off a $50 purchase at
Food Lion grocery store. It was in the front section, and it’s good
through Sunday, July 6th.

If you don’t get the Washington Post, you can sign up for a 7-day trial here of their online edition (it’s free) and print the coupon. It’s on page A10.

Kroger: Free Totinos Pizza Rolls – From Melissa:

Kroger has their Daytona deals going on right now, where you buy 10 of
certain items, and you get $3 off your order. Totino’s pizza rolls (15
ct.) are on the list and are on sale for 10/$10. There is a $.35
coupon here and here. My Kroger doubles coupons up to $0.50, so it was $.70 off, making them
$.30 each, or $3.00 for 10. Minus the $3 for buying 10, and they’re
free.  Plus, they count your pre-coupon total toward the $100 you need
to get the $.10/gal. gas discount, so you get $10 credit for that.

Winn-Dixie: Baby Club – From Jen:

Join the Winn-Dixie baby club and you’ll receive coupons in your email for lots of freebies. I have gotten the following from them so far: free photo frame, free baby dish and spoon, free baby products (body wash, shampoo, lotion or powder), free baby wipes, and even a $10/$50 coupon!

As usual, Wendy has the scoop on the Hy-Vee deals here.

Starbucks: FREE drink card in Sunday’s paper!

I know, I know, I’m really behind here. I’m trying to clean out my inbox before the long weekend…

Many areas received an insert from Starbucks in their Sunday newspaper. This insert included a free drink card redeemable DAILY for a free 12 oz. hot or cold coffee drink from Sunday through July 14, 2008!

Okay, since we’re not getting the paper right now (long story!) and I’ve yet to find a paper from Sunday in the recycling bins yet, can someone tell me whether this coupon was in the Kansas City Star? If so, I’m going to turn the recycling bins inside out till I find one! 🙂
